One of the reasons I’d always wanted to come to Thailand was because of the beaches. Typical postcard beaches. While I still haven’t gone to the Southern islands, which are the most famous ones, I was able to go to Ko Chang for a weekend. This island is located to the east of Bangkok, and is only a 4.5 hours mini van ride and a 1 hour-long ferry, so it’s really not bad.
Ko Chang is the third largest island in Thailand, after Phuket and Ko Samui. However, it is much less developed. We went on low season, so it didn’t feel too touristy and it was actually really nice and calm.
The island is very mountainous, which makes it beautiful because of the contrast of mountains/jungle and ocean. We stayed at Lonely Beach, which is an area of the island that has many bars and restaurants, and is known for being the place where most backpackers go. Our guesthouse was called Margaritaville and it was awesome. It only had four bungalows, and a nice little bar owned by a Swedish couple and a Canadian. I really felt like in paradise, eating great food, chilling at the beach, walking in a road full of monkeys… I know, don’t get too jealous :).
Since it is known for its treks, we decided to do one to the northern part of the island. It was a 7 hour-long trek, and it really wasn’t easy. We had to climb a lot, and be really careful of where we stepped. It was a challenge but I loved it. After about 4 hours, we reached the highest peak of the island to get an amazing view. After that, we got to a small waterfall where we had lunch and went in the refreshing water (with fish that would nib your feet if you stayed still for too long). It was a long day, but very rewarding.
I also saw an wonderful sunset that Joris (crazy Dutch guy) was able to capture with his camera.
We did some kayaking, except it started pouring down when I was kind of in the middle of the ocean. Honestly, it felt pretty cool, but we had to go back because it wasn’t very safe. Still, the water was so clear we could see tons of giant (I really mean giant) jellyfish.
All in all, the weekend was pretty relaxing. The beach was beautiful, our group was pretty cool and I had sooo much fun!
